How Do You Accelerate a team’s performance?
The answer to this question intrigued us for many years – so we set out to discover for ourselves what makes for a high performing team.
It ended up with teamshiftTM a new way of thinking about accelerated team performance.
How Did TEAMSHIFTTM Come About?
TeamshiftTM has its roots in field-based research in organisations such as Lotus, SR Technics and British Telecom. It started life as a form of diagnostic tool and team improvement methodology that could assess and help develop a team’s performance and track this over time.
The aim was to find a methodology that could help accelerate team performance. It has evolved since its formative design into a method that now identifies the 32 critical pathways of a successful team, which associate with four Cornerstones. Team Identity
At the heart of this was our firm belief that successful teams (communities) are central to creating the sort of society that we all wish to belong too. We knew that this didn’t matter if this was in the private, public or charity sector as successful teams shared very common DNA regardless of their sector. Many of our lessons had been about what bad looked like and we have spent years struggling ourselves in poor teams that had significant problems. We knew what it felt like to work in an amazing and energised team, but we didn’t know where to start to reinvent the critical ingredients that would help us build successful teams in the future. The range of options was immense in terms of how one goes about building a successful team. But just where do you start? We read widely and knew about many of the academic, team development initiatives and personality-based models on the market, but this still left us searching for a successful formula that would identify all the aspects of a great team and how to create and build such a team. In particular we had limited time and wanted to know where to focus our limited resources and energy. We were looking for a systematic way of a team reaching a high level of performance. We term this Team Mojo.
Our research and knowledge led us to our first pathway in the TEAMSHIFTTM model. It was the very first pathway we identified (& probably the most important one) that all successful teams have. That is, they have a clear purpose. We termed this Identity. All great teams have this critical ingredient. You will hear lots of corporate speak about branding, however whilst this is a critical factor at the heart of any winning team, you should be also looking for genuine commitment from individuals who want to join and stay with the team. This comes through a deep connection with what you are doing as a team and relates directly to the team’s reason for existing.
We call this ‘identity’.
It does not matter particularly what your company or organisation is doing or selling, what is important is that you attract people who connect strongly with your team’s identity and want to be part of your community. They need to be intuitively tuned into what you do; your values need to match theirs and if they don’t it will be almost impossible to get them to go that extra mile when it is most needed. If this connection is not present, there will be disequilibrium. Find out more by reading our first Chapter.
